Alvin Martin: 'Scousers and cockneys get on. It's the mickey-taking'
Soccer News on Guardian UK &bull Dec 16, 2011
Alvin Martin: 'Scousers and cockneys get on. It's the mickey-taking' Good thanks. So you were playing football this morning? How did that go? Yeah, it was against a team that won a competition through Nivea and it was actually in Brentwood and I'm based in Romford. They were all young, enthusiastic footballers. We had Ian Walker in goal, Ray Parlour, Rob Lee, Luther Blisset, Tony Woodcock, Viv Anderson, Nigel Winterburn and Rob Jones, so we had a fairly strong side. Unfortunately we didn't have any legs, so they had plenty of legs over us. We passed the ball for fun,… Full Story »

Sir Alex Ferguson rounds on critics as Manchester United beat Wolves
Soccer News on Guardian UK &bull Dec 11, 2011
The Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, applauds the fans following his team's 4-1 victory over Wolves. For Mick McCarthy the ordeal was not restricted to the boundaries of the football pitch. His was a withering, spill-my-pint kind of look when he was asked after the game whether a certain former Manchester United captain should have been more restrained in his criticisms of the current Old Trafford team. An old-timer such as McCarthy does not… Full Story »

Sunderland v Blackburn Rovers
Soccer News on Guardian UK &bull Dec 11, 2011
So here it is then, the day Sunderland supporters have been waiting for: the arrival of a Sunderland fan at Sunderland for his first match as the Sunderland manager as Sunderland look to escape a relegation scrap that would not go down too well in the city of Sunderland. Have I mentioned Sunderland at all yet? Oh, yes, I have. Forgive me Blackburn followers, for I know your team is also playing today, but it's hard to get away from the feeling this match has an awful lot to do with the home side, or, more specifically, their new manager.… Full Story »

Four Score
That's on Points &bull Dec 5, 2011
Excuses are like ... Yuuup (tm) ... Yakubu, yes, that Yakubu scored four goals Saturday for Blackburn Rovers in a 4-2 win over Swansea City. That's one of those great sports photos that tells the entire story, as the Swansea players are seemingly in as much shock as everyone else on planet Earth. Alternately, the standing still, jaw dropped, eyebrows raised defense probably (stress probably) isn't the best way to go about business.Fortunately for Swansea, allowing four goals to Yakubu -- who amazingly is only 29 years old -- isn't an instant Willy Wonka Golden Ticket back to the Championship. It… Full Story »
